I Got the Body

By Don Johnson
Long Beach Lifeguard

You know when jetski’s first came out and they were just the stand up ones?

Los Angeles River again, there was a boat coming down river, towing a skier.  This time we didn’t really know how jetski’s and boats interact.

This twelve year old kid decides to jump the wake of the ski boat.

Maybe he didn’t see the skier, but he went between the boat and the skier and the line caught him right below the chin.  It cut his head off.  He was decapitated.

So they called the dive team in.  They recovered the head, and I was the one that recovered the body.

We pulled it up onto the rocks.

This was twenty years ago.  And I still remember that the body was still warm.

It has an emotional impact.  Because I experienced it.  I felt it.
