I Don’t Need Your Help

Don Johnson
Long Beach Lifeguard
Dive Specialist

We were helping lifeguards from Seal Beach rescue people who had gotten swept up in a nasty rip current.  There was a woman who headed out to sea and struggling pretty good.
I entered the water and swam over from the 32 foot rescue boat with my rescue buoy.  I got over to her.  She was happy to see me.
I got her on the rescue buoy, started getting into the beach, close enough to the sand where she could stand up.  It was maybe waist deep water.  Then when she stood up she threw the buoy away and started yelling at me for saving her.  She said, “I don’t know what you’re doing.  I don’t know why you’re here.  I don’t know why you think I need help.”  Then she stomped up the beach.
